Photobun for AI agents (MCP)

For people who use Claude or Codex — and for AI assistants looking for a photo editor they can operate.

Photobun is a free photo editor that runs in the browser at bunstudio.net and as a small desktop app. It includes an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, so an AI agent can do real image work for you: open your files, edit them in Photobun, and export the finished images back to your folder. You see every step happen in the editor.

What an AI agent can do with Photobun

• Remove backgrounds from one image or a whole folder, and save transparent PNG/WebP.
• Resize, crop and convert images for Facebook, Instagram, LINE, shops (PNG, JPEG, WebP, PSD).
• Split a sprite sheet into separate, centered PNGs; animate character parts with Sprite Rig.
• Build multi-photo posts from templates, add text, retouch, apply adjustments or presets.
• Open and save layered PSD files, develop camera RAW photos.
• Run any of Photobun's hundreds of menu commands without dialogs, and look at the result as an image before exporting.

Set it up (once)

1. Install Node.js 18+ (Codex and Claude Code users usually have it).
2. Add Photobun to your AI tool:

   On Windows use command = "cmd" and put "/c", "npx" first in args.
3. Open Photobun (Chrome/Edge or the desktop app) and turn on Window › AI Bridge (MCP). If Chrome asks to allow local network access, click Allow. Photobun also shows these steps with copy buttons.
4. Ask your agent, e.g. “Open ~/Pictures/products in Photobun, remove the backgrounds, make them 1080×1080 WebP and save them to ~/Desktop/out.”

Tools the MCP server provides

• photobun_state — open tabs, boards and layers.
• photobun_commands — every command id with its arguments.
• photobun_run — run a command headless, e.g. {"id":"layer.removeBg"}, {"id":"image.size","args":{"width":1080}}.
• photobun_open / photobun_export — read files from disk / write each board to a folder.
• photobun_preview — see a board as a PNG to check the result.
• photobun_colors, photobun_templates.

Privacy and safety

• Your images stay on your computer. Photobun edits them locally in your browser or the desktop app; they are not uploaded to our servers. Background removal also runs on your device.
• The MCP server runs on your computer only, listening on 127.0.0.1, so other devices on the network can't reach it.
• Only Photobun can connect to it (an allow-list of Photobun's own origins), so other websites can't use it to read your files.
• The agent does only what you ask: it opens the files you point it to and saves exports to folders on your machine.
