How to Crop Image Online

  1. Click Open an image; the Crop Tool is selected for you.
  2. Drag across the area you want to keep. Hold Shift to keep the box square.
  3. Press Enter or click Apply to crop, or press Esc to cancel.
  4. Save the result with File › Export › Export As.

Crop without losing pixels

Cropping hides what's outside the frame instead of deleting it, so Image › Reveal All brings the edges back if you change your mind.

Trim in one click

Image › Trim removes transparent borders or a solid margin based on a corner pixel's colour, ideal for cut-outs and screenshots.

Crop to a selection

Make any selection with the Marquee tool, then choose Image › Crop to crop exactly to it.

Rotate and flip

Rotate by 90° or 180° and flip horizontally or vertically from the Image menu, or add space around the picture with Canvas Size.

Cropping is often the quickest way to improve a photo: it removes distracting edges and puts the attention on the subject. A simple guideline is the rule of thirds, placing the subject about a third of the way in from an edge rather than dead centre.

For social media, crop to the shape the platform displays: square for profile pictures, 4:5 portrait for Instagram feed posts, 9:16 for stories and reels, and 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails. Templates create boards with these exact proportions.

When you crop several pictures for the same layout, open them as boards in one tab so you can compare the framing side by side before exporting them all together.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop an image to a square?

Select the Crop Tool and hold Shift while dragging. The box stays square, which is what profile pictures and many social posts need.

How do I crop to an exact size like 1080 × 1080?

Create a 1080 × 1080 board from a template or File › New, bring in your photo with File › Place Embedded and scale it with Free Transform until the framing is right. Then export.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

No. Cropping removes area but doesn't resample the pixels you keep. Quality only changes if you also resize or export with heavy JPEG or WebP compression.

Can I undo a crop later?

Yes. Use Undo, or Image › Reveal All, because the cropped-off pixels are kept in the layers while you work.
